The Diamond - April's Birthstone
12 April 2019
Those born in April are lucky enough to call this scintillating gem their birthstone, a symbol of clarity and strength. The April birthstone is arguably the most universally admired, and is also rich in history.
Discover what makes your birthstone a powerful statement of your finest qualities with a brief insight into nature’s precious creation.
The diamond is so strong, in fact, that its name comes from the Greek word “adamas,” which means “invincible” or “unbreakable.” The timeless charm of the diamond was cherished long before it became the April birthstone, and the origin of diamonds is as fascinating as the lore that surrounds it.
The discovery of diamonds near Kimberley, South Africa, in the late 1860s marked the beginning of the modern diamond market. Traded as early as the fourth century BCE, diamonds were coveted by royalty and the wealthy.
Over the centuries, the diamond birthstone was thought to be an antidote to poison and provide protection against the plague. Some claim that it is a boon for longevity, strength, beauty and happiness.
Natural Coloured Diamonds
Natural coloured diamonds exist in a delightful range of hues – from yellow to cognac, champagne to pink, blue, green, brown and black. They provide an unconventional, and often statement alternative to white diamonds. The colour is dependent upon the type of impurities that are present in the stone. For instance, yellow stones have minuscule traces of nitrogen while blue ones contain boron.
Through our membership of the Natural Coloured Diamond Association, Rohan Jewellers is able to source the very best coloured diamonds from around the world. See our designs.
Argyle Pink Diamonds
Their natural colour palette ranges from the palest of blush pink, through to ocean-like blue and violet, and rarest colour of all diamonds – red. Admired as the most concentrated form of wealth in the world, Argyle pink diamonds are extremely rare.
Even with approximately ninety percent of the world’s pink diamonds produced by Western Australia’s Argyle Diamond Mine, a whole year’s worth of production of stones over half a carat would fit in the palm of your hand. Rarity by any measure.
As an Argyle Pink Diamonds Select Atelier, we are a trusted source for the assured provenance and chain of custody for the most scarce of all diamonds.
The classic romance of white diamonds cannot be denied. Each is unique on a spectrum of the ‘4Cs’ of diamond quality – colour, clarity, cut, and carat weight – as created by the Gemological Institute of America.
As part of our inclusive creative design process, we are able to source your ideal white diamond from our local and global suppliers.
Diamonds for milestones
In addition to being April’s birthstone, the diamond is the gift of choice for the 60th and 75th wedding anniversaries. And, of course, today the diamond engagement ring has become a near-universal symbol of love and marriage.Diamond Care and Cleaning
Diamonds (Rated 10 on the Mohs hardness scale) are usually durable enough to be placed in an ultrasonic cleaner. However, if your diamond birthstone has many inclusions or has been treated, it is best to clean it with a lint-free cloth, or use warm water, mild soap, and a soft toothbrush or a commercial jewellery cleaning solution. It is also important to have your diamond jewellery periodically cleaned and its setting examined. As a Rohan Jewellers customer, we offer complimentary cleaning, valuations and examination of your jewellery piece in our boutiques to maintain its beauty and integrity over time.
With anything valuable, there is always a little bit of maintenance involved to ensure your jewellery is looking its sparkling best.
